Maltese Taxation 

Maltese tax history runs back to the Treasury of the Order of the Knights of Malta who proposed some drastic reforms in order to support the country’s economy.  Throughout the years Malta was influenced by different counties which occupied Malta through its history, until in 1813 when Malta became a Crown Colony.  British influence can be observed all around Malta, and it is clearly visible in the Maltese taxation system which was inherited from the British. Following Maltese independence local lawmakers worked tirelessly to make the small Mediterranean island stand out in the global economy. With time the Maltese tax system, which mainly follows UK tax principles, developed in an independent sophisticated system with different tax regimens which apply to individuals and companies as well as a global network of over 70 double tax treaties. Maltese Tax Benefits 

Overall the Maltese tax system can be divided into 2 main sectors: taxation of individuals and taxation of entities. 

Many individuals chose Malta as their tax residency jurisdiction of choice because of its favourable tax treatment of residents non domiciled – when only remitted to Malta foreign income is taxable in Malta, leaving the non-remitted part of foreign income outside of the scope of taxation; while foreign capital gains are not taxed at all, even if remitted to Malta. 

When it comes to corporate taxation, whether it is trading or a holding company – there is no better place than Malta when it comes to tax. The Maltese corporate tax rate is 35%, however at the same time Malta has a full imputation system, meaning that there is no tax levied on the dividends upon distribution. In most cases the shareholder of the company is entitled to a tax refund of 6/7 or 2/3 of tax paid in Malta, furthermore, in case of a group of companies, income or capital gains deriving from Maltese companies from qualifying “participating holdings” may be exempt from tax in Malta.
