The 26th April marks the World Intellectual Property Day - a creation of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) that celebrates the value of intellectual property while promoting public awareness and understanding of intellectual property (IP).

The World Intellectual Property Day is an event which occurs annually and is now in its 13th edition. This year’s theme is ‘Creativity – The Next Generation’, which is being celebrated through a series of stage concerts, essay competitions and public lectures, among others.

The celebrations on this day seek to foster respect for creators and their creations while demonstrating how the IP system is crucial not only to the Arts but also in everyday life through products and technological innovations used.

The origin of the World Intellectual Property Day dates back to the year 2000 when the WIPO upon a proposal by a Chinese delegation created it in order to address the gap between IP as a business/legal concept and its relevance to people’s everyday live. April 26th was chosen as it is the day on which the convention establishing WIPO in 1970 was entered into force.
