From Malta to Cambodia: How Education, Opportunity and Community Support Are Changing Lives

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to spend three weeks in Cambodia with my family. What began as a personal journey quickly evolved into one of the most meaningful volunteering experiences of my life.

During our time there, we partnered with three inspiring organisations that are creating opportunities for vulnerable children and families through education, nutrition and care. Along the way, we witnessed extraordinary resilience, kindness and hope, while being reminded of the incredible impact that communities can make when they come together to support others.

Before travelling, we launched a fundraising initiative across CC to support the organisations we would be working with.

Thanks to the generosity of our colleagues, we were able to contribute funds towards educational resources, food programmes, hygiene essentials and other much-needed supplies. Employees also donated clothing for children, helping us bring practical support directly to the communities we visited.

This journey may have taken place thousands of kilometres away, but its impact was made possible by the kindness and generosity of the CC community.

One of our key partnerships was with Dream Big Ministry, an English learning centre serving families living alongside the railway tracks in Phnom Penh.

What began as a chance connection through social media quickly grew into an ongoing commitment. United by a shared belief that education is one of the most effective ways to break the cycle of poverty, we provided books, educational resources and classroom equipment to support the centre's programmes. We are now exploring ways to continue supporting their educational initiatives in the future.

Another highlight was visiting Les Restaurants des Enfants (LRDE), an organisation that has held a special place in my heart since 2015, when I first began sponsoring a young girl through their programme.

Meeting her in person after all these years was an incredibly humbling experience and a powerful reminder of the lasting impact that support and opportunity can have.

Today, LRDE provides nutritious meals to more than 800 children every day. During our visit, we made a donation, purchased essential supplies and committed to supporting a new project to transform a shed into an air-conditioned library and study space for children.

We also spent time at Kais Kids, a children's home that provides care and support for 39 children.

During our visit, we contributed food supplies, games, activities and specialised medication for one of the children. What remained with us most, however, was the children's energy, positivity and joy. Their resilience was both inspiring and humbling.

The centre is also developing a sustainability project through a fruit and vegetable garden, which we hope to continue supporting.

Each organisation we visited shared a common belief: education creates opportunity.

Whether through a classroom, a library, a feeding programme or a safe home, these organisations are helping children build brighter futures.

The experience reignited my passion for philanthropy and reinforced the importance of investing in people and their potential. While our time in Cambodia has come to an end, our commitment has not. We look forward to continuing our support through fundraising, sponsorships and future volunteering initiatives.
