The Parliamentary Secretary for Citizenship and Communities together with Identity Malta have launched a new residence permit for third country nationals residing in Malta. Apart from featuring new aesthetic changes the newly launched residence permit will be more secure and difficult to forge since it contains the latest security features. In order to protect the identity of all third country nationals living in Malta, the personal data of the individual will be engraved by laser on a poly-carbonate substrate card, making it extremely difficult to forge and tamper with.

The new residence permit will be issued for any new residence applications or renewals of expired permits. Any existing permits will remain valid until the date of expiry indicated on the residence card.  The new residence card format will also be applicable to UK nationals who are beneficiaries of the Withdrawal Agreement and thus may benefit from the 10 year residence permit.

All the 27 European Union Member States are to comply with the new residence card format by July 2020. The new residence card format will eventually also apply to EU nationals as per the latest adopted EU legislation.

How can we Assist?

Our Residency & Citizenship team will guide third-country nationals applying for a residence permit in Malta on the process and requirements of their application while indicating the expected time frames based on the specific circumstances and nature of the application.
