A new fund has been launched during the first edition of Malta TECHXPO. The Malta Venture Capital Scheme is aimed at helping start- ups set up operations in Malta. The fund shall be investing equity in start-ups focused on innovative technologies such as video game development, Fintech and e-sports. 

About the TECHXPO Malta 2023

Between the 19th and 21st of September, TECHXPO showcased Malta’s successful endeavors in Artificial Intelligence, Technology and Industry. It followed the three main thematics within the MED9 Summit, where a number of digital presentations highlighting Malta’s economic competitiveness and resilience where presented.

It offered an exceptional platform for business-to-business networking and allowed fellow professionals, industry leaders, and potential collaborators who had a shared passion for technology-driven progress to connect.

Who attended the TECHXPO

The TECHXPO was well attended by budding technology-based start-ups and key players in the industry such as Baxter, Toly, ST Microelectronics and Methode, who all have presence in the form of manufacturing facilities in Malta. During the TECHXPO, Malta held a MED9 forum, which brought together eight ministers from the Mediterranean EU states, together with Director General for Communication, Content and Technology for the European Commission, Roberto Viola. 

Malta Venture Capital Fund

The objective of the fund is to incubate in Malta a sustainable technology ecosystem and to foster a robust ecosystem of financial support for start-ups who would need to accelerate their growth through funding opportunities. 

Start-ups who are currently in the commercialization phase can tap into this fund  which will be managed primarily by the Malta Government Investments Agency and will eventually establish a specific entity, Malta Government Ventures. An investment policy will be established by an ad hoc board of entities which will be set up by this fund including MGI, MIMCOL, Malta Enterprise, Malta Development Bank, the National Development and Social Fund, and Gaming Malta. 

Eligibility for the Venture Capital Fund

Each eligible start-up can receive a maximum equity investment of up to Eur 500,000. It is anticipated that around 20 companies shall benefit from the fund over the course of two years. The sectors that will benefit from this investment include video gaming, esports, ICT, Fintech, Life Sciences, Pharma, Green Energy, Filming Industry, Agritech, AI, Communications, Electronics, Financial Services, Medical Devices, Software, Technology, VR, Bluewater Industries, and Digital Technologies.
