Malta's 100 years of Aviation

Malta is celebrating 100 years of Malta Aviation. Malta aviation took off the Maltese Islands back in February 1915.

Anniversaries create an opportunity to reflect on past achievements and help us acknowledge how far we've come. Malta has reason to celebrate its 100th aviation anniversary and take pride in its accomplishments in the aviation industry since the first flight by a seaplane took off from the deck of Royal Navy aircraft carrier in the Grand Harbour.

Aviation in Malta outlook

The aviation industry has over the years become a significant contributor towards shaping Malta's economy, especially with the establishment of the island's own national airline Air Malta in the early 1970's.

Malta also boasts a robust legal framework, enabling the sector to continue developing holistically and meet the industry's growing demands. In particular, it has established a Maltese Aircraft Register which amongst others, enables and regulates the registration of aircraft and aircraft mortgages, attracting further investment into Malta.

100 years are however not enough for the industry to reach its highest potential. In this regard, the Maltese Government is committed to making the aviation sector amongst "the pillars on which the local economy will rely for economic growth".[1]
