EUIPO reports an increase in trademark registration

EUIPO Executive Director Christian Archambeau has shed light on the record filing numbers for EU Trademark registrations experienced in the first months of 2021. Archambeau has stated that:

‘there has been an explosion in intellectual property rights as a driver for business success’

With an increase of around 25% in EU trademark registrations/applications, there has been an all-time record in trademark applications in March. Whilst the global trend is mostly driven by Chinese demand, the increase has also been attributed to the SME initiative launched in this year’s IP day. The SME fund has received nearly 5,700 applications for EU Trademark registrations.

All major countries have experienced an increase in demand, with the exception of the United Kingdom. China has now also joined the TMview initiative.

The EUIPO is expecting the increase in registrations not to be a one-time peak, but rather at a steady growth during the years to come.

Throughout the years our intellectual property team has helped clients obtain EU-wide protections for their marks and designs. Through a centralized process, an EU Trademark registration will provide mark owners rights over their property throughout the EU.

Protecting Your Mark  - EU Trademark Registration

If you have a distinct mark or design, and you have not yet obtained protection, this is the time to start planning your IP strategy. Stand out from the crowd by protecting your brand and identity and do not delay your EU Trademark registration.
