The Maltese Shipping Register was confirmed as the largest merchant flag in Europe and seventh worldwide by Clarkson Research Services, deemed as one of the leading providers of statistical services in the maritime sector.
Figures for 2011 show that the Maltese registry is the largest in Europe, moving up from the second place held last year. Indeed, Malta’s Register registered an increase of over 6 million tons, representing a grand growth rate of 16.1%. Thus, by the end of 2011, Malta’s Ship Register boasted of 45.6 million gross tons of merchant and fishing vessels as well as yachts and superyachts.
For the third year running, positive results were also recorded in the case of registration of superyachts. In 2011, the Malta flag registered an increase of 18.6% over the previous year so that by the end of the year 300 superyachts were flying the Maltese Flag.
In addition under its New Inspection Regime, the Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control declared Malta’s flag as having ‘low risk ships’. This facilitates current and future shipping operators who, as a result of having Maltese registered ships, are less likely to be targeted for port State control inspections, which would hinder their shipping operations.
Ausitn Gatt, Minister for Malta’s Infrastructure, Transport and Communications, attributed Malta’s strong performance not only to the competitive financial incentives that Malta offers but also to the continued effort of the regulator and the high level of professionalism with which Malta’s shipping community services ship owners and operators. He described Malta’s results in the shipping and aviation industry as representing “another milestone towards establishing Malta as an international centre of excellence in the Mediterranean in these sectors.”
