Maritime Law

Malta offers a whole range of international integrated maritime services, complemented by several reputable facilities. This is evidenced by the steady growth of the Malta Shipping Registry which can boast of having grown to be the 8th largest in the world and the 2nd largest in Europe. Currently, there is also an on-going process of privatisation and development of various yacht marinas around Malta and Gozo.

Chetcuti Cauchi can assist in all matters of a maritime nature; from ship and yacht registration to the incorporation of ship owning companies, ship sale and purchase, chartering and leasing and many other areas. We regularly assist clients in connection with the registration of vessels under the Malta flag as well as with the registration of companies, which own, manage or administer such vessels.

Recent Work

The firm is currently acting as adviser to a vessel owner against whom proceedings have been initiated before the Maltese courts for a claim exceeding 3 million Euros. The claimants have requested the Maltese courts to issue an order prohibiting the transfer of the vessel as well as the registration of any mortgages on the vessel. Our Maritime team together with our litigation lawyers are making detailed submissions to the court for such request and any orders made by court to be withdrawn. Simultaneously, we are in constant communication with clients and claimants, in order to ensure an out of court settlement.

All Chetcuti Cauchi firms operate separately and independently under the Chetcuti Cauchi mark.
