Malta and Denmark signed a favourable Double Taxation Agreement in 1999. The Agreement provides for nil taxation of dividend income where the corporate beneficial owner of the dividends directly owns 25% of the share capital of the subsidiary for a twelve-month period preceding the date in which the dividends are declared, or 15% in any other case.

Danish investors have expressed interest in company formation in Malta following an interview by the Hon. Consul, Bjørn Petersen in Funen, Denmark about the attractive features of the Maltese Company.

The Malta Chamber of Commerce and the Scandinavian Business Forum have hosted a visit by a Commercial Attaché from the Danish Embassy in Rome and the General Consul of Denmark in Milan. The Malta Chamber's Internationalisation Desk organised meetings with Denmark's Honorary Consul in Malta, with Malta Chamber officials, Finance Malta and Malta Enterprise. The Chairman of the Scandinavian Business Forum commented that the visit had put Malta on the map for the Danish diplomatic mission in Italy. He planned to alert Danish companies to the many business opportunities in Malta.

In 2006 the Danish and Maltese Prime Ministers addressed a joint press conference in Malta, the first time a Danish Prime Minister visited the Islands. Dr. Gonzi noted how the bilateral relations between Denmark and Malta have been very good and have sustained regular growth over the past few years. A niche area to further develop relations between the two countries was identified in Denmark’s development of alternative sources of energy; in particular wind energy. This niche area is of particular interest to Malta for recently the government launched a call for international interest in developing offshore wind farms in deep sea water. The Maltese Prime Minister said that he hoped that Malta and Denmark would find a way to cooperate so the issue can be addressed. Prime Minister Mr Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Denmark “would be delighted” to cooperate with Malta further in this field.

The Danish Prime Minster also said that the bilateral relations between the two countries are “the very best”, adding that there is room for enhancing and developing such relations in the future.

Denmark has been one of the fastest growing investors in Malta with 61 subsidiaries established in Malta in the past two years, double the figure of 2007 and 2008.
